Compare the cost per useful addition to your own checklist. Singles identify the card you receive; sealed contents are uncertain. The worksheet below is hypothetical and uses no claimed Mudwater pull odds or current store prices.
| Route | Illustrative cost | Useful additions | Effective delivered cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 specified singles | 20 × $5 + $8 shipping = $108 | 20 identified gaps | $5.40 per addition |
| Sealed opening scenario A | $108 total assumed | 12 matching gaps assumed | $9 per addition |
| Sealed opening scenario B | $108 total assumed | 6 matching gaps assumed | $18 per addition |
Start with the missing cards, not the sealed price
Write a target such as “20 missing Base designs in acceptable raw condition.” Use the official edition catalog to confirm that the intended finish exists, then compare exact product variants. A Foil copy may be attractive, but it does not fill a Base-only target if your definition requires matching finishes. Decide whether a mixed-finish binder counts before opening or ordering anything.
For known singles, add the actual delivered prices of the required items. In the example, 20 cards at an illustrative average of $5 cost $100 before a hypothetical $8 delivery charge. The resulting $108 buys 20 specified additions, assuming the seller fulfills the correct items. Replace every variable with the actual basket and checkout terms when making a real decision.
Opening cost depends on what helps your collection
The official sealed structure is ten cards per pack according to the official launch overview. Ten cards received is not automatically ten new checklist entries. Some may duplicate what you own, repeat another card in your purchase, or use a finish outside your target. Without verified collation and pull data, no responsible worksheet can promise how many useful additions a pack will supply.
Suppose a purely hypothetical opening costs $108 delivered. If it produces 12 additions that satisfy the same target, the effective cost is $9 per useful addition. If only six qualify, the cost is $18. Neither result is a prediction. This sensitivity calculation shows why the denominator matters: spending the same amount can produce a very different completion outcome.
Give duplicates a documented value or leave it at zero
Collectors often subtract hoped-for resale proceeds from opening costs. That can make a weak comparison look attractive. A more conservative worksheet starts duplicate proceeds at zero. If a duplicate actually sells, record the received amount after platform fees, shipping, packaging and any refunds. An unsold ask is not money recovered.
There can still be nonfinancial reasons to open sealed product. The opening itself, trading with a friend or keeping a favorite unexpected design can be enjoyable. Assign that enjoyment its own discretionary budget. It does not have to be disguised as a guaranteed saving on completing the set.
Use a combined plan when your goals differ
One practical approach is a fixed opening budget followed by exact singles for remaining gaps. Keep the two decisions separate: the sealed budget buys an experience with uncertain contents; the singles budget buys specified cards under stated condition terms. Stop and update the checklist after opening so that the next order does not duplicate a card you just obtained.
Before checkout, compare seller count, delivery charges, returns information and the correct finish. Several small orders can cost more to deliver than one consolidated basket. A lower card-only ask can therefore produce a higher delivered total. The useful comparison is the complete purchase needed for your chosen collection, rather than an isolated headline pack or single price.
