An Original 151 binder is satisfying because every pocket has a purpose: one Pokémon, in Pokédex order, from Bulbasaur to Mew. The tricky part is choosing what “Original 151” means before buying cards. A species collection is not the same thing as completing a single expansion.
Choose your version of the project
Our vintage Original 151 collection brings together cards from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, and a Wizards of the Coast promo Mew. Our modern Original 151 collection follows the same species goal using a mix of modern expansions. Neither description means every card comes from the Scarlet & Violet—151 expansion. If matching that expansion matters to you, use its checklist instead.
Map the binder before opening sleeves
A nine-pocket page side holds nine cards. For 151 Pokémon, allow 17 usable page sides: 153 pockets, with two left over. Count usable sides, not just the number of sheets advertised on a binder. Here are the easiest checkpoints:
- Side 1: Pokédex numbers 001–009, the three Kanto starter evolution lines.
- Side 2: numbers 010–018, from Caterpie through Pidgeot.
- Side 10: numbers 082–090, from Magneton through Shellder.
- Side 17: numbers 145–151, from Zapdos through Mew, followed by two spare pockets.
For any other side, multiply its number by nine to find the final Pokédex number, then count back eight for the first. Pencil the ranges on a separate checklist, not on cards or sleeves that could transfer marks.
Sort by species, not the printed set number
In a mixed-expansion collection, the small collector number on the card identifies its place within its original set. It is not its position in your 151-species binder. Base Set Pikachu belongs in Pokédex slot 025 even though its collector number is 58/102. Recording both numbers prevents accidental gaps and duplicate purchases.
Give Mew its own checkpoint
Mew belongs in slot 151; Mewtwo belongs in slot 150. If you are completing a vintage binder yourself, search for WOTC promo Mew #8 and check the specific printing, language, and condition before ordering. Do not assume that every card called Mew fills the same version-specific collecting goal.
Keep the two spare pockets useful
Add a removable project card stating your chosen language, preferred condition, and whether mixed expansions are intentional. Use the final pocket for a favorite alternate artwork or leave it empty. That small note makes the collection understandable to a future gift recipient—and gives you a clear stopping point instead of an endless list of variants.
