A budget under $500 can start a meaningful vintage Pokémon collection. It does not have to buy an entire expansion. Small starter groups, framed displays and promotional sets offer different ways to collect the era.
The examples below were priced under $500 in our store when checked on September 30, 2026. Prices are in USD before any applicable tax or shipping. Follow each product link for the current price, condition and availability.
A small group of familiar starters
The Unlimited Kanto Base Starters Set is a four-card collection listed at $34.99 when checked. The Shadowless Kanto Base Starters Set was $70. These are compact starter collections, not complete 102-card Base Sets.
If the first-edition stamp matters to you, the four-card 1st Edition Kanto starter set in MP–DMG condition was $299.99. The condition range is central to that comparison: Moderately Played to Damaged is not interchangeable with Near Mint.
A collection ready to display
The nine-card Johto Starter Evolutions Framed Showcase was $319.99. It groups the Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile evolution lines in a frame. This is a themed display, rather than a complete Neo expansion or the full Johto Pokédex.
All 151 Pokémon in a different vintage format
The 1999 Burger King Pokétrivia Original 151 set was $310. It covers all 151 original Pokémon as promotional trivia cards. These are official Pokémon collectibles, but they are not Pokémon TCG cards; the listing also explains their perforated edges.
A modern alternative if the characters matter most
The Modern Original 151 Complete Set was $320. It offers the familiar first-generation Pokémon using a mix of modern cards. Choose it for the character collection, with the understanding that it is a modern alternative rather than a 1999 vintage set.
Make the budget fit the collecting goal
Decide whether you care most about a particular printing, a display, favorite characters or an expansion checklist. Then compare condition and contents within that goal. There is little value in buying a larger collection if it is the wrong format for you.
Availability is specific to the selected option. A listing marked Pre-order is available to order with the longer dispatch window stated on the product page. If timing matters, browse the in-stock collection and check the status before purchase.
