Searching for “vintage Gengar” produces cards that share a Pokémon but not a checklist slot. Two may even share artwork while having different collector numbers. For a focused Halloween project, start with four English cards and label their differences before shopping.

Separate the four identities

  • Fossil Gengar 5/62: the holo version.
  • Fossil Gengar 20/62: the non-holo version.
  • Sabrina’s Gengar 14/132: a holo from Gym Heroes.
  • Sabrina’s Gengar 29/132: a non-holo from Gym Challenge.

The last pair shows why a denominator alone does not identify a set. Both Gym expansions use /132. Read the set symbol and complete card name, then match the numerator too. “Sabrina’s” is part of the identity, not a seller’s nickname for an ordinary Gengar.

Choose one example or all four

A species binder needs only one Gengar. A four-card study needs four specific versions. Our 62-card Fossil set has a different goal: it includes both separately numbered Gengar slots alongside the rest of the expansion. Choose your endpoint so an appealing duplicate does not quietly turn a small project into a much larger one.

Make a comparison page

Place the two Fossil cards side by side, with the two Sabrina’s cards below. Add a removable note naming the expansions and numbers. In a nine-pocket page, reserve the remaining positions for selected Gastly and Haunter cards rather than buying five unrelated fillers. Blank space is useful while you decide which evolution line to explore.

Shop the number, then inspect the copy

Search for Fossil Gengar 5/62 or search for Sabrina’s Gengar 29/132. Results can include different printings, languages, or unrelated matches. Verify the final product and seller selection. Check the edition stamp separately: holo finish does not mean first edition.

When condition matters, ask for clear front and back photographs plus an angled holo view. Sleeves can obscure light marks, and a bright reflection is not proof of a clean surface. Decide whether front appearance or uniform condition across all four matters more to you.

Expand in the direction you enjoy

If trainer-owned artwork is the attraction, explore the Gym Heroes collection. If paired finishes interest you more, continue with Fossil. Both are coherent next steps; neither requires treating every Gengar ever printed as part of this first project.

Product photos are examples from our collections; check each current product page for exact contents, condition, price, and availability.
