The 1st Edition Fossil Set debuted in October 1999 as the third expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in English. Following Base Set and Jungle, Fossil brought 62 new cards, including Legendary Birds, fossilized Pokémon, and fan-favorites from the Kanto region. Its release cemented Pokémon’s global TCG dominance during the height of the late ‘90s craze.
Named after the prehistoric fossil cards it introduced—like Kabuto and Omanyte—the set also featured some of the most collectible cards in Pokémon history, including Articuno, Zapdos, and Dragonite. In 1st Edition form, these cards carry the iconic black “1st Edition” stamp, making them highly sought after by serious collectors.
